FortisAlberta Meter Exchanges Beginning This Fall

The Town of Raymond is sharing information from FortisAlberta about upcoming meter exchanges in the community.

Starting in September/October, FortisAlberta crews will begin replacing meters as crews and materials become available. Customers will not be charged an additional fee for the meter exchange.

What customers need to know

  • The meter exchange typically takes less than 10 minutes.
  • Customers will experience a brief power interruption while the meter is replaced.
  • A FortisAlberta technician will knock on your door, explain the process, and confirm you are ready before beginning.
  • Once the new meter is installed and power is restored, the technician will confirm it is working. Some electronic devices may need to be reset.
  • If no one is home and the exchange cannot be completed, the technician will leave a notice with instructions for scheduling a technician visit.

Meter exchanges are a routine part of FortisAlberta’s operations. Each year, the company installs or replaces more than 30,000 meters.

Benefits of the new meters

The new meters will provide several benefits, including:

  • Bi-directional capability for customers with solar panels and other forms of microgeneration.
  • Improved safety through detection of tampering and electricity theft.
  • Improved system reliability in the future by allowing meters to communicate outages directly to FortisAlberta’s control centre in Airdrie.
